We all subscribe to various quotes or words of wisdom across our lives. One of the few I love is "The best part of the journey is not the destination, but the people you meet along the way." - Unknown.
I found really good insights from Eric Kimberling in his article - My Motivational Speech for Digital Transformation and ERP Implementation Teams. Eric provides some thoughts on principles to apply and areas to focus on as an organisation.
On the top of the list for me is:
Believing the "one-size-fits-all" approach does not recognise your organisation's expert knowledge and strengths.
Change management is essential to complete this journey successfully.
The recognition that organizational or technological change is a journey, not a destination.
What does this mean for you?
One-size-fits-all
Eric states, “The challenge lies in leveraging technology to enhance processes without undermining your inherent competitive strengths”. Does this mean you should not critically look at existing systems and processes? No, we should, but you should try to preserve or augment what makes your organisation unique and gives it a competitive edge.
A crucial aspect is to ensure that you build internal capability and knowledge. Eric recommends, “Empower your employees to play an active role in the digital transformation, even if it pushes them beyond their comfort zones. In the end, the success of the change will affect your people, positively or negatively.
Change Management
Change management is foundational and essential in delivering a successful transformation. Successful transformations focus on these very human-centric aspects more than technological ones.
We can leverage technology change to effect our transformation, but your people drive this change's successful delivery and adoption.
It's a Journey
Understanding that Digital transformation is a journey, not a destination is crucial. Eric says: “The foundation of success lies within the project team, the leadership team, and the broader organization. Their collective efforts, commitment, and resolve will be the driving force behind a successful digital transformation.”
If all see themselves onboard and function as one team, the organization will own and deliver the result.
