I found this great article written in 2016 in the Harvard Business Review “What Great Listeners Actually Do” written by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman.
Over my career, the generally accepted approach to being a great listener has been to 1.) Be quiet and listen 2.) Replay back to the person what they are telling you to show that you understand 3.) Actively use facial cues and body language etc. to show engagement with the person.
This article has found that there is way more to been recognised as a good listener that these 3 things alone and that “Good listening was consistently seen as a two-way dialog”.
Therefore having a two-way actively engaging and cooperative conversation provides the foundation for “Good Listening”.
Definitely worth the read, as the article is still very relevant for us today.
